Whitehawk & Manor Farm Community Association, also known as Whitehawk Valley, is based at the Valley Social Centre, a revitalised community hub in the heart of Whitehawk in Brighton. We are committed to supporting local residents in an area of significant deprivation and believe that defibrillators are a vital resource. They are something we hope is never needed, but essential to have available at all times.
We are seeking your support, alongside the generosity of AEDdonate, to fund a public access defibrillator. This will help ensure that life-saving equipment is readily available to anyone who may need it in an emergency.
Brighton is also home to the late Douglas Anthony Chamberlain, a pioneering cardiologist who founded the first paramedic unit in Europe and helped revolutionise pre-hospital cardiac care, leading to the development and use of external defibrillators. We would like to continue that legacy — one heart at a time.
Each year in the UK, over 30,000 people experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Survival rates remain low, with fewer than 1 in 10 people surviving.
In these situations, every minute counts. Without immediate CPR and defibrillation, survival chances decrease by around 10 percent per minute. Early access to a defibrillator can significantly improve outcomes.
Despite this, public access defibrillators are used in only around 9 percent of cases. Increasing access within communities like Whitehawk can make a real, life-saving difference.
Once installed, the defibrillator will be registered with the local ambulance service and available for use 24/7.
It doesn’t replace emergency services but provides immediate support in those crucial first minutes while help is on the way. The faster a shock can be delivered, the greater the chance of survival.
Your support can help save lives. Here are some ways to get involved:
