On Sunday 15th September I will be taking on the challenge of completing Ironman Wales, also known as ‘The Dragon’. The event starts with a 2.4 mile sea swim, followed by a very hilly 112 mile bike ride and then finishing with a marathon in and around the streets of Tenby.
I will be doing this to complete a personal challenge, but also to raise money in honour of my dad, David Beebee. For the last 6 months of his life my dad only had the use of 10% of his heart – but he continued to love and laugh – making his legendary ‘dad’ jokes with the nurses right up to the day before he passed. So I would like to use 100% of my heart to love, laugh, live and attempt to complete this challenge.
30,000 people die each year from out of hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), 620 of these are people under the age of 35 and 270 of these deaths happen to children within schools. If defibrillation takes place within the first three minutes of a SCA, the patient’s chances of survival increase by upwards of 80%.
Having the defibrillator installed means that it can be deployed by the local ambulance trust in a bid to give the patient the all-important shock to the heart prior to the ambulance arrival. The defibrillator is by no means a replacement to the ambulance service, it just allows patient treatment to commence immediately
All money raised will go towards a much needed defibrillator in the community of Aldridge. It will be based on the outside wall of St Thomas Church, so can be accessed by all the wonderful groups that run there and also the community and surrounding areas. If it saves just one life – it will be money well spent. Any donations, however small, will be very gratefully received.
If you are interested in becoming a Community Champion yourself or are aware of any places which may benefit from having public access to a defibrillator then please contact us on 01785 472224 or email us on info@aeddonate.org.uk. We will help you manage the campaign from start to finish, providing fundraising materials, a page just like this one and in some cases funding* helping you to help your community on its way to becoming heart safe.
*funding is dependent on your location as to what we have available from our funding partners. Funding changes on a daily basis to call us to find out more.
